In fact, the finish of all functional components is rightfully expected to be beautifully executed on a watch of this caliber – it is only when the more superficial aspects of the Zenith Academy Georges Favre-Jacot are scrutinized that contention arises.

Extremes aside, the general consensus by people at the 30 or so brands displaying at SIAR seems to be that Latin American watch buyers are highly knowledgeable, extremely passionate, and tend to know what they like. Given local tastes, large-sized watches are popular, as well as ones with bright colors or prominently visible complications. Mexico's most elite citizens are not known for their humble display of wealth (even if they can't show it on the street). They also seem to like brands with storied histories, not in the "legitimacy proving sense" that Europeans like old brands for, but probably because Latin Americans seem to just really like history; and they find it helps them enjoy a brand and its products all the more.

What has made watch dials unique over the last 200 years or so is that, while there are tried and true ways of indicating the time and other corollary information on a watch dial, designers, for whatever reason, desire to explore new ways of indicating information. This creative drive has helped us experience a wonderfully diverse universe of watch designs - most of which are designed to do the exact same thing. With user-customizable smartwatches now increasingly available, the democratization of watch dial variety is here.

As far as the hands are concerned, the proportions of the sword-style hands seem in alignment with the dial real estate, each one reaching to the appropriate index track. It also features what seems to be (to me, at least) their signature signed seconds hand, in this case, showing up in a darker green hue.

The George Daniels 35th Anniversary Watch features the co-axial escapement, although one that Roger Smith modified, so that now the co-axial parts (where the two escape-wheels which were previously located on top of one another) are crafted from the same wheel. That is the part you see in the lower right corner on the image above: the escape-wheel features the more usual "boot-shaped" teeth while also having teeth raised to function as the secondary wheel that has previously been mounted on top, "co-axially."

While we snob around loving our mechanical watches (which I certainly do), it is easy to forget just how tough a quartz movement-based watch can be. Perhaps the Victorinox Swiss Army INOX's steel case is extra thick and there is some special buffering around the movement, but in reality, a quartz movement is going to be a lot more durable than a mechanical one. The weakest part of this watch is that it has moving hands. If you put a digital screen and removed all the moving parts you'd be in G-Shock territory. But we can't do that. We need to draw some lines. This is a Swiss watch, after all, and Victorinox Swiss Army has a reputation to uphold. That being of a durable sports watch maker that nevertheless injects a sense of slick European style and design into their watches. While the Victorinox Swiss Army INOX is not universally loved, I do find the clean dial and hexagonal bezel to be attractive.

Louis Moinet Mecanograph Watch Review

Given the base watch's modern design I really never could have envisioned this new Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 44mm (aBlogtoWatch hands-on debut here) fully covered in diamonds. In pictures, it is easy to tell the 44mm wide version from the smaller 42mm wide version because of the more elaborate and angular chronograph pushers (versus simple and round pushers on the smaller case).

Sure, that is what one would expect to happen, but I do believe it would be an interesting idea to have a co-branded watch where the movement is marked as Jaeger-LeCoultre. It could possibly make for a collectors' item later on, plus would add that extra bit of credibility in terms of technical prowess – a Ralph Lauren movement means and says nothing, and that is perfectly fine. They reached out to one of the greatest movement suppliers in the Swiss watch industry – which is no surprise, as both brands are owned by the same luxury group, Richemont – so why not make the most of it?

Later, Daniel Quare did, however, lay claim to the invention of the striking mechanism in a watch. The chiming mechanism is believed to have been useful as it allowed the wearer to know the time in pitch black darkness – i.e. without having to light a candle, at a time when electricity (or Super-LumiNova) had not yet been invented. The task of fitting bells, wire gongs and the time-tracking striking mechanism within the confines of a watch was quite complicated, rendering the watch repeater an object of high luxury. Consequently, unlike, say, the tourbillon, chiming functions are still not available in the few-thousand Dollar segment – and likely never will be. Of course, nowadays, we have numerous gadgets to remind us of the time and plenty of artificial light to see by, and yet mechanical minute repeaters, especially those crafted by high-end watch companies, remain highly coveted items.

While I found a lot to like with the MKII Paradive watch, there was one design feature I wasn't as sure of, at least at the start - the integrated crown protection on the case. While I understand that it makes for a smoother look (and perhaps some ease of manufacturing), while affording protection for the crown (and removing points that might otherwise snag on something), it does make for an off-balance case, in terms of visual weight.  As I spent time with the MKII Paradive watch, though, that was something that just kind of faded away - plainly put, you get used to it.
