The second reason for having a reserve is psychological, and has to do with our natural desire to want to compete. An auction starting at ,000 for an item with a ,000 value is far less interesting than one that starts at .00 for the same item. Starting an auction with a low opening bid is an excellent way to get people excited and bidding. Once people start to bid (being attracted by a low opening bid), the idea is that they will start to compete with each other to "win." The mental need to win, combined with the desire for the item they are bidding together creating a very healthy bidding environment. For this reason, the reserve price has a decent purpose and is often used. However, this ideal situation of having a bidding frenzy that seller's get excited about is less common than you might think. The reality is that only the most desirable items are able to enjoy a large bidding war that exceeds the reserve price. Most items placed with a reserve price do not sell.
Ikepod is designer Marc Newson's quirky but cool watch brand. From its inception, most of his watches shared the same round bulbous look and had model names like "Hemipode." The watches are very cool and very hard to come by with extremely limited distribution (only two authorized dealers in the US). Despite their rarity, Ikepod watches have always intrigued me and looked like they enjoyed more than niche product appeal. Further, their modern looks being minimalist and all, are still very functional, with some of the existing models offering very complex features.

We know that tourbillon watches are expensive. The complex little movements are at a premium based on the difficultly of manufacture and the prestige of owning one. The bar has been set pretty high with all variations of multi axis tourbillons and flying tourbillons that give a great view of the action. What ever happened to just the basic tourbillon? Because more tourbillon watches go for k and up, the proprietors of such luxuries feel the need to spruce them up with lots of gilding and fancy appointments to justify the prices. That is typically the case with most tourbillon watches that feel more a like novelty than like something worth wearing on a daily basis. But it doesn't need to be that way.

In what is likely to be a device with abyssal battery (well maybe not that bad), the LG GD910 features a touch screen and microphone, as well as a few buttons on the side as its data input options. Yea, you might need small hands to operate it, but don't you carry a stylus around with you anyway? I have a feeling this little watch phone is going to be easier to use than people predict. I stress that this is a bid deal because it is the first time I can tell that a major electronics manufacturer is taking watch phones seriously enough to mass produce them. The LG GD910 will be available in Asian and European markets only, but that isn't to say that a few stray units will make it to our shores.

To explain what the reserve is, first take a look at what eBay has to say about reserve prices here. This is good information, but eBay doesn't give you the whole story. In reality, reserve prices serve two purposes. First, it is a way to reduce the cost of the auction for the seller. eBay's pricing system differs depending on the opening price of the item. There is a cheaper auction listing price associated with listing an auction starting at .00, versus a 0 or 00. So as a seller, you can reduce the initial listing cost by offering the auctioned item to start at a lower price, but not actually selling it until it reaches a threshold amount (the reserve price).
These watches are every bit as expensive as the original Titanic DNA watches, but now in more flavors with dial faces like lunar surfaces complete with asteroid pock marks. I like how the off-center subsidiary seconds dial on some of the watches is a little seconds hand moving in a particularly large (for the face) crater. It is just clever and fun. While the shapes and designs of the watches share elements from their Titanic collection, there is no Titanic metal in here; however, there are other materials of interest.
