An interesting feature relatively new on some Citizen Eco-Drive watches is an indicator that tells you how well the current light hitting the dial is charging the movement. You'll see a scale on the right half of the main dial that looks like a power reserve indicator. You'll see a similar, smaller scale on the second half of the subsidiary dial. If you didn't know better, you'd be confused as to why there are two. Well, the smaller indicator is the power reserve indicator telling you how much battery power there is (up to about two years when full). The larger scale is used to indicate how well the current light hitting the dial is charging the movement. All the hands come together in order to indicate this information when this mode is activated by pushing the upper pusher. This mode will also activate the smaller subsidiary hand to move away from the day of the week indicator to the power reserve indicator momentarily.
Furthermore, Hong Kong has been the focus of massive investment and attention by the watch industry over the last few years, as they have shifted many resources to the once booming Chinese watch market. Hong Kong was a primary focal point for the Chinese market, because most of the luxury sales in Hong Kong were by "mainlander" Chinese tourists, who traveled there exclusively to shop. This is not only because Hong Kong has an excellent selection of luxury goods, but prices cheaper than those in mainland China. aBlogtoWatch has covered the watch industry in Hong Kong in the past, as well as visited the long-running Hong Kong Watch & Clock fair, which our Managing Editor David Bredan last visited earlier in September 2014, just before the protests began.
So, why does this particular watch matter? It is because of the promised battery life which is 3-4 days with moderate usage. "Big deal," you may say, but once we consider that most presently available Android Wear watches offer (often less than) a day of "power reserve," and that the watch packs a 320x320 pixel, color LCD display, that 3-4 day promise sounds a lot better. How did they manage to do that? Well, along with the color LCD, they also managed to slip in an e-Ink display, which I imagine greatly contributes to the ability to conserve battery. I was tempted to think that – when the LCD was in use – this was another Android Wear piece of kit.

Back in 1992, while Ray Grenon was in college, he worked for a store called "The Best of Times" in Rochester, NY. They had a case of watches that were .99, a case of watches that were .99 and so on. Lots of Timex products and Swatch. Their high end was Seiko LaSalle, Bulova and Citizen. Ray reports that it was a fantastic experience which started him on his journey which resulted in opening Grenon's of Newport in Newport, Rhode Island in 2000.
Gilt and Michael Bastian weren't only needed to help design the watch's exterior, but also to make sure it passed muster from a fashionable perspective. What I've come to understand more and more is that the tech companies aren't going to these fashion companies in order to make things that are on the cutting edge of fashion, they simply want to know that, from a visual standpoint, consumers will accept and adopt wearable tech. Something like the Michael Bastian MB Chronowing is actually a pretty good example of that. Taking style cues from a number of modern sport watches ranging from Audemars piguet and IWC to Hublot, the Michael Bastian MB Chronowing is good-looking enough to make your average consumer not consider it little more than a cool-looking digital watch.
One of the world's most popular luxury watch brands is TAG Heuer, whose recent history has been a bit tumultuous. A few days ago, TAG Heuer CEO Stephane Linder stepped down after being in the role for only about a year. Linder had replaced long time TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Christophe Babin, who amicably left to move to another company in the LVMH group – as Bulgari's new CEO. News of Stephane Linder's departure was accompanied with the announcement that watch industry legend Jean-Claude Biver would take his place as the interim CEO of TAG Heuer.
Like Tag Heuer, Panerai is also a brand that draws polarizing opinions – perhaps even more so than Tag Heuer. Fans of Panerai – who like to call themselves Paneristis – are fervent and not shy about professing their love for Panerai watches; whereas those who dislike the brand regard Panerai watches as little more than glorifed fashion watches. Personally, I belong to the former group, and while it is true that Panerai churns out watches that are more or less like each other, one cannot deny that both the Luminor and Radiomir cases have become modern day design-icons. However, Panerai recently released a couple of new watches based on their new Radiomir 1940 case, and here is one of them.

The Bulova Watch Corporation, as you may know, has been rapidly evolving over the last few years, with a focus on more classically-inspired designs, technical know-how, and a dedication to what made the historically-American brand great to begin with. Much of this has to do with Bulova President Gregory Thumm, who, as a master watchmaker himself, is helping the company to focus on its strengths.

That is natural, but what Kevin later acknowledged is that in some instances, he purchased watches in advance of his own ability to fully appreciate them. I can relate to the feeling, having spent over a decade of my life thinking about watches and learning new things about horological items and the production thereof. Even though Rose is considered by many people to be a genius, the world of watches presents a formidable learning curve to even the most adept minds. Rose comments that he has already bought and sold many more watches than he still owns. A survey of his current collection reveals something very interesting about Kevin's watches - for the most part, they all reflect his personality very well.
The above image is from an original 1960s Accutron by Bulova advertisement, which in our opinion, tells of a time when watches were sold the right way. This ad was likely the inspiration for the inclusion of Bulova Accutron as a story device in the final season of the television show MAD MEN. This graphic will be reproduced on a large canvas poster as a gift for attendees of the Bulova event that is, once again, on November 20th in Los Angeles at Feldmar Watch Company (9000 West Pico Blvd. LA, CA 90035). After a while, I finally went to a jewelry store to buy one, but the salesman told me that there was this even newer, more accurate watch which used a quartz crystal. I wondered why anyone would put a rock (OK, mineral) in a watch and how that would do anything useful. The tuning fork, I could sort of understand. I ended up with the quartz watch, taking it on faith that this was even newer tech. But I always considered the original Accutron a lost love.
